Best Iced Tea Makers

As a general rule, I do not recommend kitchen unitaskers. They take up valuable counter or cabinet space in the kitchen and typically do not save you any time or effort. One exception to this rule is the iced tea maker, especially if you or your family drinks copious amounts of iced tea on a daily basis.

Benefits of an Iced Tea Maker:

Iced tea makers are certainly more convenient than brewing tea the old-fashioned way. You do not have to babysit the water until it boils or worry about forgetting that your tea is steeping and winding up with a bitter brew. Most iced tea makers also allow you to brew directly over ice, so your tea is chilled and ready to drink within minutes.

Countdown of the Best Iced Tea Makers:

The following iced tea maker review looks at five of the most popular models available online and at major retailers.

#1 Takeya Flash Chill Iced Tea Maker

• Top Features

Takeya’s iced tea maker measures 4.1 inches by 6.1 inches by 12.2 inches. The 2-quart pitcher is BPA-free, stain-resistant, and capable of withstanding cold or hot liquids. The airtight lid is available in a variety of fun colors and will keep refrigerator odors from affecting the flavor of your iced tea.

Takeya Flash Chill Iced Tea Maker

• Pros and Cons

Pros

The Takeya iced tea maker allows you to flash chill your tea to lock in the flavor and nutrients. Once the tea is finished brewing, you simply remove the infuser, add ice, close the lid, and shake for 30 seconds. Your tea will be perfectly chilled and ready to serve. Since all of the components of the iced tea maker are dishwasher-safe, cleanup is a breeze.

The detachable tea infuser allows you to use bagged or loose-leaf tea. Takeya even offers its own line of pre-measured teas in various flavors.

Cons

The pitcher is a little tall to fit on most refrigerator shelves; however, it does fit in most refrigerator doors, and the lid is tight enough to allow you to store it on its side. The 2-quart pitcher is on the small side for large families or gatherings. The fact that the machine does not heat the water means that you still have to take the time to boil water or plan ahead in order to make cold-brewed tea.

Since the pitcher is heat and cold resistant, you have the option of brewing your tea hot or cold. To brew your tea hot, add one large tea bag or 8 teaspoons of your favorite loose-leaf tea into the infuser and attach the infuser to the lid. Add 1 quart of boiling water to the pitcher. Lower the infuser into the hot water and allow the tea to steep for the recommended time.

Once the tea has finished steeping, remove the infuser and add sweetener and ice. Replace the lid and shake for approximately 30 seconds to flash chill your tea.

To make cold-brewed tea, add the same amount of tea to the infuser and attach the infuser to the lid. Fill the pitcher with cold water and replace the lid and infuser assembly. Allow the tea to steep in your refrigerator for up to 12 hours. Once the tea is ready, remove the infuser and add your preferred sweetener.

#2 Mr. Coffee TM70 3-Quart Iced Tea Maker

• Top Features

This is the first of three Mr. Coffee iced tea makers to make my countdown. This model measures 15.5 inches by 8.5 inches by 12.5 inches. It comes with a generous 3-quart pitcher, a removable basket for bagged or loose-leaf tea, and an adjustable brew strength feature. This model does require electricity and comes with a simple on/off switch and automatic shutoff for safety.

Mr. Coffee TM70 3-Quart Iced Tea Maker

• Pros and Cons

Pros

A clear window allows you to quickly see how much water is in the reservoir, and the pitcher is marked to show the appropriate water and ice levels. The pitcher is dishwasher-safe for easy cleanup.

Cons

There is not a locking mechanism to secure the pitcher to the body of the tea maker, so you have to be careful to ensure that the components are properly aligned to keep the tea from ending up on your kitchen counter. This iced tea maker has a relatively large footprint, which may be problematic for those with limited counter space. The manufacturer’s instructions say to add sugar to the brew basket; however, it does not always dissolve well. You are better off adding sugar or simple syrup at the end of the brewing process.

Next, adjust the steep lever to your desired brew strength, add ice to the pitcher, place the pitcher flush against the appliance, and push the “on” button. Your tea should be ready in about 10 minutes.

#3 Hamilton Beach 40911 2-Quart Electric Iced Tea Maker

• Top Features

The iced tea maker from Hamilton Beach features a 2-quart pitcher and measures 17.5 inches by 11.5 inches by 4.5 inches. It has an adjustable brew strength selector, brew indicator light, and automatic shutoff. The brew basket will accommodate bagged or loose-leaf teas.

Hamilton Beach 40911 2-Quart Electric Iced Tea Maker

• Pros and Cons

Pros

The brew basket allows you to use bagged or loose-leaf tea without the need for a paper filter, and the slide-out tray keeps the pitcher securely in place during brewing to prevent messes. The fact that the appliance has three brew strength options allows you to customize your tea to your taste.

Cons

The pitcher and other components are not dishwasher safe, which can be inconvenient. The size and shape of the appliance and pitcher take up a lot of room on the counter. Although the pitcher is slim and meant to fit in the door of your refrigerator, the length and height still take up a considerable amount of room.

#4 Mr. Coffee 2-Quart Iced Tea Maker for Loose or Bagged Tea

• Top Features

This is one of Mr. Coffee’s more basic ice tea makers. It measures 11 inches by 7 inches by 15 inches. It comes with a 2-quart pitcher and will allow you to brew bagged or loose-leaf tea. An indicator light will let you know when the appliance is brewing and will automatically shut off when the cycle in finished.

• Pros and Cons

Pros

This iced tea maker has a relatively small footprint, which makes it well-suited for those with limited counter space.

Cons

According to the manufacturer, the pitcher, lids, and brew basket are not dishwasher safe. The pitcher can also become stained over time. The need to hand wash the components, along with the smaller pitcher size, make this iced tea maker less convenient than some of the other models on the list.

This Mr. Coffee iced tea maker is user-friendly. Simply add the desired amount of water to the reservoir. Fill the pitcher with ice to the level marked on the pitcher, place the brew basket on top of the pitcher, and line the basket with a paper filter. Add the appropriate amount of tea to the basket and cover with the steeping lid. Ensure that the pitcher is snug against the appliance and push the “on” button.

#5 Mr. Coffee 2-in-1 Iced Tea Brewing System with Glass Pitcher

• Top Features

This is the most elaborate of the three Mr. Coffee tea makers on this list. It features a 2.5-quart glass pitcher, a brew strength selector, a water reservoir with a window, and a permanent filter basket. The footprint of the appliance measures 11.4 inches by 10.5 inches by 14.8 inches. The “2-in1” in the name of the appliance is somewhat misleading since it refers to the fact that you can brew bagged or loose-leaf tea, which is no different than the other tea makers on this list.

Mr. Coffee 2-in-1 Iced Tea Brewing System with Glass Pitcher

• Pros and Cons

Pros

The filter and pitcher are both dishwasher-safe. Since the pitcher is made from glass, it will not develop unsightly stains with use. The fact that the machine comes with a permanent filter means that you do not have the expense or waste of paper filters. This Mr. Coffee model also has a pivoting brew head, which makes it easier to avoid drips.

Cons

The glass pitcher is rather delicate and can break if not handled carefully. Although the manufacturer says to brew the tea directly over ice in the pitcher, I would not recommend this. The temperature changes can make the glass more prone to breaking.

If you prefer an electric model that will allow you to walk away while your tea brews, the Mr. Coffee TM70 3-quart iced tea maker offers a nice balance of features and is easy to use.
